Spirituality, Spirit, and Self-Care

Whether it’s physical, mental, or emotional, we all need self-care. That can mean taking extra vitamins, hydrating, resting, using medication, or seeking guidance and support. Many of us follow a personal wellness protocol — or at least try our best to. Caring for our bodies and minds also strengthens our energy field, or aura.

But there’s one area we often overlook: spiritual self-care. Spiritual support is just as important for our mental and physical health. When we intentionally include spiritual energy in our self-care routines, we nourish ourselves on every level — body, mind, and spirit.

So how can we weave spirit into our self-care?

Spiritual Self-Care When You’re Unwell

When we’re physically run down, even the smallest tasks can feel draining. Yet there are many gentle, spiritual practices you can incorporate that require little effort but can amplify your energy field and assist in healing. Remember — your body and mind affect your spiritual health, and your spiritual health affects your body and mind.

Here are some easy ways to integrate spiritual energy into your daily self-care:

1. Energy Work

If you’re a Reiki practitioner, self-Reiki is essential. Accepting the healing flow of universal energy instantly infuses your energetic field with light and restoration.

If you’re not a Reiki practitioner, you can still benefit from hands-on healing — a practice that has existed for thousands of years. Close your eyes and imagine yourself in perfect health, however you most need it right now. Call upon your higher self, a deity or spiritual guide from your tradition, or a relative in spirit who was a healer (herbalist, physician, nurse, or any healing modality).

Ask them to assist in healing your body and/or mind. Be specific about what you need. Imagine this energy filling you with high-vibrational light, infusing every cell with the frequency of transformation.

2. Using Powerful Symbols

I personally love the Norse runes — 24 ancient symbols, each carrying a unique energetic property rooted in myth and cosmic order. They are often called the building blocks of the universe.

There are runes for strength, intuition, emotional flow, release, stillness, protection, joy, and more. When I’m unwell, I often use the rune Uruz (strength), represented by the aurochs — a wild bull symbolizing raw power and vitality.

Before I eat or drink, I draw Uruz in the air above my food or water and visualize the energy of that symbol infusing my meal. When I consume it, I imagine I’m literally digesting strength into my body.

You can use any symbol meaningful to you:

Draw an invoking pentagram to call in the healing power of the elements and spirit.

Use a banishing pentagram to release what’s making you ill.

Draw a crucifix and recite a healing psalm.

Simply write words like heal, purify, or strength and visualize their energy working within you.

3. Meditation

Meditation connects us directly with our higher self. When we’re sick, cortisol levels often spike — leaving us stressed, foggy, and overwhelmed.

There are thousands of guided meditations on YouTube, ranging from 5 minutes to over an hour. All you need to do is sit back, listen, and receive.

You might also try:

Single-focus meditation — focusing only on your breath for 20 minutes to quiet the mind.

Yoga Nidra — also called yogic sleep, this deeply restful practice relaxes the body while planting healing intentions into the subconscious.

4. Crystal Energy

Crystals carry different energetic properties and ancient wisdom. While crystals themselves don’t heal or change us, they inspire the energy within us to heal, grow, and set boundaries.

Choose crystals that feel soothing, uplifting, supportive, or loving. Keep them nearby, meditate with them, or place them on your body during rest. Let their presence remind you of the healing potential already within you.

Final Thoughts

Your spiritual self-care is just as vital as your physical and emotional well-being. By blending practices like energy work, sacred symbols, meditation, and crystal support into your daily life, you create a holistic healing environment that nourishes every part of your being.

When you care for your body, mind, and spirit together, your energy field grows stronger — and so does your connection to the divine.
